Classification based on time (long-term budgets, short-term budgets and current budgets)
Classification based on time is another way to categorize budgets. Here are the three main types based on time duration:
- Long-Term Budgets: Long-term budgets typically cover a period of more than one year. They are focused on strategic planning and setting financial goals for an extended time horizon. Long-term budgets are often used for capital expenditure planning, such as major investments in infrastructure, research and development projects, or expansion plans. They provide a roadmap for the organization’s long-term financial objectives and help in determining the resources required to achieve them.
- Short-Term Budgets: Short-term budgets usually cover a period of one year or less, such as a fiscal year or a quarter. These budgets are more operational in nature and focus on the day-to-day financial activities of the organization. Short-term budgets include detailed plans for revenue generation, expense control, cash flow management, and other short-term financial goals. They provide guidance for managing resources and making financial decisions in the near term.
- Current Budgets: Current budgets, also known as rolling budgets or continuous budgets, are continuously updated and revised throughout the year. They cover a fixed number of future periods, such as 12 months, and are adjusted periodically to reflect new information and changing circumstances. Current budgets allow for ongoing planning and adjustment based on actual performance and updated forecasts. They are particularly useful in dynamic and unpredictable environments where flexibility and responsiveness are crucial.
Each type of budget serves a different purpose and timeframe within the organization. Long-term budgets focus on strategic planning and resource allocation for the future, while short-term budgets provide detailed guidance for managing day-to-day operations. Current budgets offer the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and maintain relevance throughout the budget period. The selection of the appropriate budget type depends on the organization’s objectives, planning horizon, and the level of certainty in the business environment.
